Summary/Abstract: In this paper a new concept of so called implicit properties is introduced, which are used to enhance the immersive object representation in multimodal virtual reality environments. Implicit properties represent hidden object features (i.e. magnetization, radiation, humidity, toxicity, etc.) which cannot be perceived by the observer through his/her senses but require specialized equipment in order to expand the observer’s sensory ability. Special attention is given to the case of calculating the values describing the implicit properties distribution applying computer aided engineering methods particularly the finite element method (FEM). Our approach extends the underlying general scene graph structure of the virtual reality software system incorporating additional effects nodes for implicit properties representation. The method developed is aimed to be integrated in the workflow for solving engineering tasks and is oriented towards presenting implicit object properties through multiple sensorial channels (visual, audio and haptic).
