Summary/Abstract: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) guidelines were developed to make websites easier to use. However, these guidelines were not specifically intended to cater to designing easy-to-use web-based distance education environments. This article discusses HCI-guidelines pertinent to designing easy-to-use web-based distance education courses. Furthermore, the de rigueur and gumption in using tablet-like computers to access web-based distance education courses is also a concern in further aligning these guidelines to mobile devices. The article explores the literature with respect to a selection of research areas in factors of course website design and usability including website structure, navigation, use of visuals and Web page layout.
