Summary/Abstract: The article tries to present an objective and comprehensive image of the Portuguese socio-political background during the first years of World War II, which allowed the local Jewish community organizations, together with the JOINT and HIAS to receive, shelter, and assist thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing from the Nazi regime and looking forward a new life far from the occupied Europe. The ambivalent way in which Portuguese authorities decided to solve the refugee problem is also dealt with.
