Summary/Abstract: The word chàlga refers to a particular style of Bulgarian ethno pop music, as well as to a popular modus vivendi in Bulgaria, embodied in the images of the way chàlga stars live. In the first part of this essay I am telling the story of how chàlga music has grown from mar-ginal phenomenon to political and social issue. In the second part of the essay I am argu-ing that the essence of chàlga is a kind of melodrama made from incidents in everyday life. Furthermore, I am attempting at fashioning a poetics of the chàlga stars: what are the signs of being a chàlga star, how these signs make a system, and what is the message they communicate
