THE EFFECT OF WRITING ACTIVITIES ON MATHEMATIC ATTITUDES OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Summary/Abstract: In this study, the effect of letter writing and journal writing, both of which are among writing activities for learning purposes, attitudes of the 6th grade students attending secondary school is examined. The study is conducted with 72 6th graders at Dede Korkut Secondary School the district of Tuzla-İstabul during 2014- 2015 academic year. One control group and two experimental groups are specified randomly. Additionally, the mathematic attitude scale, developed by Aşkar (1986), is used in order to evaluate students’ attitudes. Concerning the data analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Kruksal Wallis test and Mann Whitney U test, for the related samples the t-test and Wilcoxon Bookmarked Series test are used. In conclusion, it is understood that writing activities increase achievement in the long run writing activities for learning purposes have a positive effect on students’ attitudes.
