Summary/Abstract: The phenomenon of globalization in the European economic area and the fact of the creation of a supranational organization, that is the European Union, has meant the opening of borders and the introduction of the provisions on free movement of persons, goods and services, which − in the sphere of healthcare – manifests itself mainly through the internationalization of healthcare systems. Due to the fact that the phenomenon of cooperation within the European Community is growing in strength, mainly due to the growing number of agreements on international cooperation, the member states have developed and implemented the provisions on the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare. The present study reveals the process of coordination of health protection in the European Union, with particular emphasis on cross-border provisions of the directive. It also contains a review of the usage of entitlements by Polish patients, together with an analysis of the costs, which they generate for the public taxpayer. The scientific method was to review the literature with special reference to laws, both national and European Union and the analysis of data from health care sector reports.
