Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is the assessment of the extent to which the current common agricultural policy (CAP) supports risk management in agricukture. The study is based on the analysis of the solutions undertaken within the CAP concerning the extend and character of risk present in the EU agriculture. The results show that only to a limited extent do the current CAP instruments support risk management in the agriculture as there are few of them and only several EU member states have implemented them. At the same time the main CAP instrument – direct payments – does not encourage farmers to implement additional risk management tools. The next CAP reform should introduce a more holistic approach to managing key elements of risk present in agriculture.
