Summary/Abstract: State aid is strictly defined within the European Union regulations as it cannot affect the functioning of a single market. The paper is aimed at presenting the changes of scale and structure of the state aid offered by the chosen EU member states during the current crisis. Among the eight countries chosen for the analysis there are these most affected by the current crisis as well as the biggest EU economies. The study is based on EC’s data on state aid in the period 2006-2011and Eurostat’s data on macroeconomic conditions in the EU. The analysis shows what type of state aid policy is conducted by EU countries and how it can influence the economic growth based on the macroeconomic theory. It seems that the aim of consolidating public finances achieved higher priority among the surveyed EU member states than the need to stimulate the economy.
