Summary/Abstract: Since 2006, the area to the south-west of Mangalia, in the vicinity of the Mangalia lake, has been developing as a new residential area, Dobrogea I, yielding the remains of a new Hamangia site. The archaeological research took place in 2006 and 2007 in two main areas of the site, to the south-east and to the north. A large number of habitations and sunken huts were exposed. Among the archaeological finds we mention a large number of pot sherds, figurines, lithic industry and animal remains. Another Hamangia site was discovered in 2007 in the area of the monastery on the left bank of the Tătlăgeacu Mare bank, south east of the 23 August village. From the fresh ploughed soil were collected pot sherds, an impressive number of lithic splinters, a few cores and a many microliths, among which scrapes and small flints plates. The preliminary results of our studies on the Hamangia sites allow us to presume that there are at least three such Neolithic sites around the city of Mangalia. The new excavations offer us the opportunity of further research regarding the latest stage of the Hamangia culture and of its connections with other contemporary cultures.
