Artistic direction and directorial searches at the Šiauliai drama theatre

Summary/Abstract: This article gives an account of the evolution of the Šiauliai Drama Theatre, one of the oldest Lithuanian theatres, and analyses the developments in direction from the date of its opening in 1931. It discusses also the contributions of the directors Borisas Dauguvietis, Juozas Stanulis, Romualdas Juknevičius, Aurelija Ragauskaitė, Saulius Varnas, and Gytis Padegimas and reveals the amplitude of their artistic searches, the diversity of directorial styles and their influence on the maturity of the actors' art. The author singles out separate periods in the history of the theatre, during which the personalities of the directors developed, and analyses the most notable productions and their artistic exclusiveness.
