Summary/Abstract: The article presents the meaning of the common good for the sustainable development of cities. It shows the role of the civil society and the mechanisms of shaping urban coommon goods. The recognition of the city as a common good results from the fact that the city is commonly used by many different actors, whose interests are both individual and collective. The strength of civil society depends on the citizens as well as the conditions that shape their co-operation. Management of the common goods in the city requires building a new relationship between the rulers and the ruled. The author analyses current processes that take place in the Polish cities in terms of govenance and support of bottom-up civic initiatives. The aim of this article is to analyse the importance of the category of the common good in the sustainable development of cities or in the modern variant of this process, i.e. smart city.
