Summary/Abstract: Income is a main determinant of tourism demand in the theory of tourism economics. Is it true in the European Union countries? Is an income the main factor differentiating countries? Author examined impact of income factor on tourism demand using statistical and econometric methods. Analysis of the correlation between GDP per capita and measures of demand for outbound tourisms showed a strong positive correlation between the two variables in 12 countries with a high standard of living and a smaller, but also positive in 16 countries with a lower standard of living. Income impact on demand for domestic tourism was negative, while in poorer countries was positive. GDP per capita was not a factor significantly conditioning tourism demand in the EU countries in the period 2004–2014.
