Summary/Abstract: Systems biology is a new biological discipline that has evolved since the beginning of the 21st century, although its roots can be traced back to the works of Ludwig von Bertalanffy, D'Arcy Thompson, Robert Rosen, and Denis Noble in the 1950s and 60s. It was aimed at overcoming the conceptual difficulties arising from the accumulation of a huge amount of experimental data in molecular biology, genetics and others fields, and the inability to use these data productively on the basis of the prevailing reductionist methodology.
