Summary/Abstract: The idea of the Stream of Consciousness was presented by William James in the article On Some Omissions of Introspective Psychology (1884) in the journal Mind. Later the famous representative of sociological theory of art Arnold Hauser related this idea with the well-known stream of painting and literature – impressionism, which got its name from the painting of Monet Impression – soleil levant (1872). Hauser even asserts that impressionism is not only the style of art, but the style of thinking of the epoch. And Hauser mentions the psychological theories of James, Bergson and Freud as examples. In this article the relations of these theories are researched and their mutual basis in the idea of the stream of consciousness is discussed. Even if we have to acknowledge differences of Bergsonian intuitivism, Husserlian academism, Freudian mechanicism, and Jamesian pragmatism, it is still obvious impressionistic spirit common to all those theories.
