Models of historical process and the concept of tradition

Summary/Abstract: Philosophy of history turns to the concept of tradition just when it stops to concern history in the two ways only: history as the science or (another way) history as the divine mystery. Understanding of history takes part in every human deal because it influences every projection of future. The article describes some questions of philosophy of history and shows how the concept of tradition depends on the answer to these questions. The questions are: the priority of historical event or historical context; the question of the unity (or unification and generalization) of history; the influence of the historical understanding on the models of human activities. Either tradition becomes a background of the historical events, or the nutrient medium to the thoughts of historical actor – in both cases it is understood as the very static and inertical phenomena. That is why, in the most cases, the term “tradition” can be found in discourses which are related to the historical determinism or historical relativism. One of the suggestions of this article is that tradition as the diachronic process of transmitting of values and, at the same time, the synchronic process of circulation of values can not be described within the limits of one culture or one age – it means that when we prefer to speak of “tradition” in the place of speaking on “historical context”, we could avoid the historical relativism.
