Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper was to reflect the role of student engagement in self-betterment and different initiatives in order to develop their linguistic and communicative skills in a foreign language on their own. In order to discover the extent to which students work on their competencies autonomously an opinion poll was conducted among 131 students of applied linguistics from the 2nd and 3rd years. In addition, it was important to find out what academic teachers can do to encourage students in self-development, through influencing and raising their learning consciousness and giving examples of best practices.
