Summary/Abstract: The main objective of the paper is to analyze the supplier selection process in developing own brand of food products. This analysis concerned a case of Polish food companies in African market. Input data was collected by the authors during a three-year selection process for private label suppliers for a leading retail chain in the Republic of South Africa and in the course of supervising deliveries to six African countries. The study presents a practical method of dividing the process of verification of suppliers into eight stages. The method proved to be practical because throughout the period of supply and cooperation between the manufacturer and the retail chain quality problems were successfully eliminated, despite strong concerns mostly resulting from carefulness in approach. At the end of the paper the authors present the most important advantages and disadvantages of the African market.
