Summary/Abstract: Delve into the history of many of the world’s national anthems, and you are likely to find traces – or at least, implications – of a surprising Hungarian connection. Take, for instance, one of the best-known national anthems of the postwar decades, that of the State of Israel. Its public performance is still banned in certain countries. Initially sung by the Zionists—who sang the tune to the text of the 126th Psalm—Hatikvah (“Hope”) is an anthem whose admittedly complicated origins have inspired conflicting scholarly accounts.
