Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to compare, based on critical sources (i.a. Gaston Bachelard’s and Mircea Eliade’s perspective on the symbol of water), the short stories ‘MS. Found in a Bottle’ (1833) by 19th century American writer Edgar Allan Poe, whose work is included in the subgenre Dark Romanticism, and “Battleship Tod” (1954) by 20th century Italian writer Dino Buzzati, whose writings are associated with magical realism.
