Summary/Abstract: The authors present tendencies in the development of Polish legal vocabulary influenced by the adaptation of the existing terminology to the conceptual system of French law after the introduction of the Napoleonic Code into the Duchy of Warsaw in 1807. The following regularities have been observed: polonization of administrative and legal terminology, introduction of word-formative calques from French, and avoidance of loanwords (Gallicisms).
