Summary/Abstract: Observation of the lexical level of Polish in the subsequent periods in its history reveals that the set of foreign verbal prefixes once contained more units (e.g. arcy-, -kontr-, post-, pre- and sub-) than just the de(z)- and re- that works in contemporary Polish word-formation report. A considerable part of verbal loan words in Polish has acquired, as a result of different sorts of reinterpretation processes, the status of synchronic derivatives with often more than just one motivation. An application of the combined methodology of historical and descriptive word formation highlights the rôle of adaptation with respect to a large part of the analyzed material. Derivation proper, as a phenomenon which occurrs fully on the Polish ground, is of marginal importance in our case. Moreover, the analysis of the material has revealed that foreign verbal prefixes are much less readily added to native roots than is the case in nominal and adjectival derivation.
