Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to discuss issues of extreme weather events on a global level and to identify the challenges facing the insurance sector relating to an evident escalation of frequency and intensity of these events. The analysis covers years 2004-2015 and was carried out on the basis of statistical data published by Munich Re. It is a period long enough to say that in recent years significant differences among the continents in terms of the size of the insured losses and overall losses have been observed. This confirms that the resilience of socio-economic systems to the broad natural disasters (except geophysical disasters) is strongly dependent on the level of development and wealth of the regions. It also means that the availability of weather risks insurance in some areas has become increasingly difficult and the cost may be an economic barrier to their use.
