Summary/Abstract: Autonomy in learning, as pointed out by numerous authors, includes the ability to determine and pursue learning goals, reflect and think critically, take responsibility for one’s own decisions, act, and evaluate the process of learning. Putting the notion of autonomy into a vocational context, one cannot but think of professionalization (professionals). Since autonomy, just like professionalisation, is not an innate ability but typically results from gradual and conscious work, the author will try to demonstrate how it is possible to foster autonomous attitudes among learners through the use of the task-based approach to teaching a foreign language (the latter as defined in the CEFR). An analysis of operations and actions undertaken by a learner while doing a foreign language task demonstrates that it is possible, at the earliest stages of learning, to shape the consciousness of learners in such a way that they are able to perceive their own learning process as part of a more general process, i.e. professionalisation. Beginning with a definition of autonomy and professionalisation (and a professional), the article analyses a learner’s activity while doing a language task, which takes place at several levels. The conclusions thus gained will serve to demonstrate a resemblance between a pupil and a professional, and the other way round, proving a strong relationship between the learning process (taken to be autonomous) and the process of professionalisation.
