Summary/Abstract: In 1716, exactly three hundred years ago, the great sword bearer Michael Cantacuzène, was executed. This study aims to shed some further light on this fascinating figure, who was one of the most important Wallachian boyars of his age. Member of the great Cantacuzène family, Michel played an important role in the political, religious and cultural life of Wallachia. Michael, along with his brothers, was involved in the politics of the realm at the highest level. Member of the prince’s council, he climbed his way to the office of great sword bearer. Michael was also an important benefactor of the Church. He founded the monasteries of Sinaia, Colţea - which also comprised the first hospital for poor people, as well as a school for underprivileged children - and Râmnicu Sărat – which he has built together with his nephew, the lord of Wallachia, Constantin Brâncoveanu. Moreover, the same Michael Cantacuzène founded the churches from Fundenii Doamnei, Mărgineni, Stâlpu and Slănic. A substantial landowner, Michael provided his religious foundations with numerous lands. However, most of his domain has been inherited by his son and daughters and, afterwards, by his nephews. Michael Cantacuzène has been executed for treason by the Ottomans in 1716, along with his brother Constantin and his nephew, Stephen, lord of Wallachia.
