Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to point out the strengths and weaknesses of selftranslation. Our study focuses on the novels Arta supravieţuirii by Lelia Trocan and Dislocaţii by Paul Miclău. The purpose of this analysis is to highlight the otherness of the source text, how translators manage to keep it in their self-translations and the processes by which they transfer or/and recover into French the images of hell lived by the deported Romanians. The study of some “self-translation devices”, among which metaphors, changes of meaning, cultural allusions, word with a different referent, puns and alliterations enabled us to identify some means of translation (such as the translation of metaphor with or without change of image, deletion of culture-specific items, descriptive translation of the image, change of meaning of some structures), in order to facilitate comprehension for the French readers.
