Summary/Abstract: Today when the current state of art is to be discussed and judged, and when our general capacity of telling anything relevant about it appeared utterly questionable, perhaps the only sure thing to be said is that there are no more great works of art and the less there are of them the more the world appear “crazily beautiful”. In contrast to the philosophers of aesthetics who respond to the current state of crisis by making their judgments about the world, French art critic Yves Michaud offers us a peculiar ethnography of the contemporary art and of its search for a radically new beginning. He renounces to the idea that a “new” state of art, what he calls “the gaseous state of art”, is to be considered as the disappearance of something we could not do without. At a time of a massive and popular quest for beauty, when the overall society is submitted to a process of estheticization, it is a tourist dimension of art and culture that has become the general way we are and the world is.
