Truth and Self-betrayal in Gabriela Adameșteanu’s Confessional Writings

Summary/Abstract: Many writers are tempted to leave notes about poetics of their work, to explain, annotate and theorize their vision about world/literature and its origins. The confessions of this type - if we are allowed the freedom to consider answers to an interview a form of confession - seem a form of self-betrayal, as they are imposing some guidelines for reading their books, the guidelines that are, fundamentally, relative. It is suffice to change the context or the cultural paradigm, and the way one is reading oneself may become desuetude. In this study I tried to show how self-betrayal and self-truth in a self-referential discourse may become ways to access fictional writings, expanding the possibility of their meaning. Starting from points of view expressed by writers such as Witold Gombrowicz, Rachel Langford, Russell West, Arno Dusini, I tried to show how, and with what result, works the game of truth and self-betrayal in Gabriela Adameșteanu’s writings, an author considered austere in matters of confession. This paper is concentrated on several writer’s statements that are extracted from a few interviews and on two somewhat complementary texts: Confesiuni literare (Literary Confessions) and Limitele rescrierii (The Limits of Rewriting).
