Religious Quest for the Meaning of Education and Upbringing

Summary/Abstract: As the necessities in human life, education and upbringing are factors that help man on his journey along the path of humanity. In light of the sublime aims that religion sets for man, education and upbringing are the foundation of the path towards one’s own self-realisation. This paper will examine the etymology of education and upbringing, as well as the Qur’anic use of the term purification ( تزکیه ), which is semantically close to the term upbringing. Additionally, the paper will present authoritative opinions on terminological boundaries of the two notions, and offer at the end a selection of definitions and present some of the key elements of those definitions.
