Summary/Abstract: We often hear about those employees who lack inner motivation or unmotivated employees and those, who have little understanding of motivation necessity. Referring to I. Matuzienė and D. Šavareikienė (2004), special attention should be given to personal motivation in a democratic society. Society conceives that it is possible to achieve company goals if its employees’ skills are used effectively. There are many ways of stimulating employees, and the manager has to do this if he / she acts effectively (Vveinhardt, Pučkuvienė, 2006). Workers motivation not only guarantees “successful production”, but it is also a market accent and a good image guarantee (Baršauskienė, Janulevičiūtė, 1999). Motivation is a very wide notion; it originates from the Latin word “movere”, which means to move, at also influences the direction and impetuosity of our behavior (Matiukaitė, Beresnevičienė, 2005). Several attempts to study motivation as an activity sphere were made in order to find out the main factors and to prepare materials for teaching this activity. The notion “motivation” is used to explain the reasons of human behavior and activity. Motivation studies explain what powers make a person act and in what way this activity is performed. A complex of different needs influences a person. A person must want to act in order to perform an action. Every person should know what needs will be fulfilled if he/she does what the company requires from him. That information must awaken employees’ wish to work. Motivation is important because when the means of influence are chosen correctly, the behavior of employees can raise the results of company production. To study the motivation of an activity means to analyze those causes and factors which initiate the activity level of a person, and make him take on responsibility for the activity. Therefore, it is very important to carry out researches on the employee motivation in modern companies. The research presented in the article summarizes the situation of employee motivation in Šiauliai companies and can be used in practice by business organizations.
