The Presentation of Women’s Position in “Shpresa Kombëtare” Newspaper and “Mbleta” Magazine

Summary/Abstract: In the early 1920s, women’s organizations “Shpresa kombëtare” of Valona and “Përlindja” of Koritza published two of the three female works of the printed media. Biweekly newspaper “Shpresa kombëtare”, edited by Marigo Posio, published six numbers during the period February 6 - May 25, 1921, while the monthly magazine “Mbleta”, under the direction of Evdhoksi Th. Gërmenji, came out in 8 numbers. Both these periodicals aimed at introducing the real economic, social and cultural situation of Albanian girls and women, as well as the potential alternatives to escape from darkness and isolation. They published not only the articles of the most popular activists of Albanian and foreign feminist movement, but also of the contemporary intellectuals who contributed through their analysis and publicistic writings to raising awareness on the necessity of increasing the level of education, economic independence and social participation. There were also informative articles on emancipation activities of feminist organizations, likewise charitable donations and patriot acts on behalf of the national question. Although the subject contents were not focused on the feminist causes and paper ephemera due to financial problems, the periodicals “Shpresa kombëtare” and “Mbleta” are of great importance to raise awareness of women on their rights and duties, as well as the need of moral, material and intellectual development to ensure equal treatment and a respected place in family and society.
