Summary/Abstract: East, west, north, south are not universal concepts. In a number of cultures and historical periods they are missing or remain unnamed. The words they designate often turn into conceptual metaphors that pierce in everyday speech. Concepts contain language and cultural knowledge, ideas, assessments. Knowing the national culture is a key to understand the right meaning.
