Old Defects Claiming Artistry

Summary/Abstract: A specific trend has been witnessed recently in the so-called ‘visual arts’, i.e. searching wittingly to emulate and imitate digitally all the defects and flaws of the analogue technologies that have been an integral part of those obsolete processes, when every effort has been made to correct or at least to keep them to a minimum. This ‘retro’ trend has gradually evolved into a ubiquitous vogue, which is especially noticeable in photography and videos. That is the reason why I am dealing with these two arts. This article traces out the types of digital simulations, offering possible explanations of this art trend, as well as its perception and impact on pop culture.
