Summary/Abstract: The issue of the concert pitch in the contemporary musical practice tends to fall by the wayside. Bulgarian musicians are under a number of delusions as to which frequency ‘is the pitch’. Almost next to nothing is known about the grounds for the internationally agreed standard for the tuning of musical instruments, in which the note A above middle C has a frequency of 440 Hz. The text deals with the historical developments of establishing this standard in a comparative discourse about the sonic artefacts of the late twentieth and of the turn of the twenty-first century in the sonic realities of practical liturgical service, speech intonation (according to Diana Deutsch’s studies) and folk music. This paper gives no straight answers, but rather provides a point of reference for a series of studies.
