Summary/Abstract: The icon “The Birth of Saint John the Baptist” was painted in tempera on wood (68,5 x 44,5 cm). There are two inscriptions in Romanian language with Cyrillic letters on the icon. The one on the upper part reflects the theme tackled by the painter. The other one, on the lower part, reveals the name of the painter: Vasile Zugrav, the place where it was painted: Sălişte (Sibiu county), the date: March, 26th, 1702 and the name: Dumitru Roşca, the person who commissioned and paid for the icon. Vasile Zugrav worked as an icon painter the first years of the 18th century and, most probably, even at the end of the 17th century, but his name has never been mentioned in any written source on such a matter. This study adds information regarding the Romanian painting centres in Transylvania in the 18th century and the list with the names of the icon painters. mitre.
