CONSIDERATIONS ON NATO’s WITHDRAWAL FROM AFGHANISTAN

Summary/Abstract: Withdrawal of NATO forces by 2014 is one of the priorities of the Alliance reaffirmed at the summit of Chicago 20-21 May 2012. This requires a reconfiguration of the mission to the allowsimultaneous transfer of responsibilities to the Afghan national security forces and the withdrawal of forces and equipment within the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The process is very complex, being subject to significant challenges, given the need for NATO to convince the international community that the mission is successful and the scale repatriation operations of military equipment. NATO will continue to assist Afghanistan after 2014, the main directions in which they will operate being the training of the security forces and funding programs for the construction of their core capabilities, without the uncertainties of this approach.
