Linguists suggest the equivalence between the English analytic diminutive with little and the synthetic diminutive in European languages. The article discusses and compares the formation and the usage of diminutives in different speech situations in Lithuanian and in English, analyses the means of translation of diminutives. The conveyance of the equivalent diminutive meaning translating from Lithuanian into English is of paramount importance in translation, as diminutives reveal peculiarities of the Lithuanian language and culture.
