Summary/Abstract: This article aims at analyzing imperatives in Turkish within the framework of pragmatics. The concept of an imperative sentence is defined, Speech Act Theory, Relevance Theory, Grice’s maxims and Imperative Sentences Relations are expounded and various discourse functions related with imperative sentences are exemplified. That imperative sentences in Turkish do not always reflect a directive force is especially emphasized. In this context, that Speech Act Theory falls short in explaining the pragmatics of Turkish imperatives is claimed.
