Summary/Abstract: The topic of the essay is the inculturation of the sacrament of marriage among the Jansi people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jansi have no central power structures or universally binding law concerning marriage and family. The author describes the communal and sacral character of marriage and family among the Jansi, deeply ingrained in the minds of the people. His research into the engagement periods and preparations to ritual marriage reveals difficulties in copying with the law passed down by the ancestors. Especially noteworthy in this connection are elaborate symbols and benedictions. Next, the author discusses the idea of marriage and family among the Jansi from the Christian perspective. He puts forward some pastoral suggestions for inculturation, taking into account traditional and sacramental dimensions of marriage. Sacramental marriage is of the outmost importance to the local churches in Africa.
