Summary/Abstract: There are many scientific studies on intercultural dialogue with Traditional African Religions (TAR). The author examines the teaching of the African Magisterium in that matter. The analysis of African bishops’ statements (especially those from Congo) allowed to distinguish two dominant themes: motivation for dialogue with the TAR and the need for a systematic study of African traditions. It is not enough to recognise the TAR as a natural, religious and cultural context in which the Africans live. It is necessary to thoroughly know these religions and their interpretation in the sight of Divine Revelation. In the statements of the hierarchy, the dialogue with the TAR is common in a wide theological reflection on inculturation (eg. Roman Missal for the dioceses of Zaire). The bishops clearly revalorise traditional religions, which from the beginning humanised the peoples of Africa – gave and give answers to fundamental questions about the meaning of human existence: life and death, the origin and the final destiny of man. The Instructions for Serving in Evangelisation and Catechesis published by the Bishops of Congo (Kinshasa 2000) – is a tangible example.
