Summary/Abstract: In the article the author again points to the failures and conflicts occurring in the education system by using a metaphor of a gendarme (depicting the top down, counterproductive strategies of the central institutions). This time the focus is on mathematical education. Problems appearing in primary and lower secondary school have been systematically pointed out and solutions have been provided. In case of primary schools the author suggests, among others, changing learning objectives, and for lower high schools – using the discovery teaching method, already proven in practice. The discussion refers to the results of a local education system reform which has been carrying out for 20 years in the so-called Local Commune Laboratory.
