Summary/Abstract: The article presents the links between religion and contemporary violent fundamentalist movements. Attention is given to the fact that the multidimensional presence of religion gives the believers a model view of the world. Besides this positive and ecumenical role, religion may also become the foundation of social and cultural dispute resulting from clashes of differences and from fears felt by communities of losing their identity. A proof is provided that the violence related to this phenomenon originates from the cultural status of religion in the expanding context of globalization.
