Summary/Abstract: The activity of secondary schools in the years 1948–1961 was determined by the constant struggle for better teaching results. Low efficiency of schools mobilized the educational authorities and teachers to take measures aimed at improving students’ educational achievements. There were introduced makeup and promotional exams. It was pointed out such measures as: explicit evaluation of students, youth organizations’ and parental comittees’ work, fewer in numbers classes, increase of labor discipline and courses for teachers. The attempts to improve teaching results were not very effective. The students’ results were still unsatisfactory. The reasons for this situation were related to overloaded curriculum, traditional teaching methods but also incorrect evaluation, community work executed by the students and insufficient preparation to education in secondary school. As a consequence, the students were characterized by the tendency for learning the material by heart, lack of independence of thinking, inability of generalization and drawing conclusions.
