Summary/Abstract: Under the rule of Miklós Horthy, Hungary pursued a policy of revision of the 1920 Trianon Treaty with a view to restoring its former borders, the ones it had during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In foreign policy it went along Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, and succeeded to partially recover its territories to the detriment of Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia—this being the reason of its participation in World War II, also against the USSR. The attempts to part from Germany after 1943 had the same objective: restoring the borders of historical Hungary from before 1918, maintaining the Horthy regime, and trying to avoid Soviet occupation. With these objectives, Hungary remained Hitler’s last ally.
