Summary/Abstract: Depot is a space for storage and preservation of museum holdings. "Underground world of the museum" for collecting, preserving and researching cultural and historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina is usually available to curators, conservators and restorers. History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina has opened the doors of the collections of three-dimensional objects to the visitors in order to present challenges and importance of museum practice. Open Depot is a hybrid: the structure was built on the symbiosis of storage and exhibition space. In this regard, the presentation of objects in their authentic environment, making objects available to visitors, is a call for decolonization of the museum, call for transferring the control over heritage from the institution to the public and citizens. The Museum storerooms were filled with content during years, and followed the museum transformations. The Museum was founded in 1945 with aims to preserve, protect and promote the collection the achievements of the national liberation struggle, and the legacy of World War II. The Museum was known as the Museum of the Revolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1993 it was renamed History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which extended the operation of the institution to other historical periods. The exhibition is located in the basement, in the womb of the museum space, to symbolically emphasize the basis from which the Museum developed. Some of the objects from this collection have never been presented to the public, while some of the objects have "seen the light of day" 30 years ago. The exhibition in the basement highlights the distance between the heritage of socialism that Bosnian post-war society set in postwar period, but also points how we should not „wash our hands" from history. Collections of the Museum of the Revolution of BiH collected and researched for more than 45 years are now seeking for new questioning and analysis, in the context of museum practice, and in the context of historiography. Open Depot, a new permanent exhibition of the Museum, is open and unfinished story about activities, functioning and social role of the Museum of the Revolution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, told through objects from World War II, and objects from the period of socialism.
