Summary/Abstract: Traditionally, the Slavic tribe of Berzetes has been localized in the lands of modern Republic of Macedonia. However, no historical evidence is available to confirm this suggestion. Archaeological findings show that these areas are poorly populated from to the end of 7th to the middle of 9th century. According to the author, the Berzetes might have been to localized in the Rhodope Mountains. It seems that this tribe was a Byzantine ally. That was the reason why in the year 774 khan Telerig tried to conquer the Berzetes, but he was defeated by the Byzantine army.
