Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the Council of Basel and its role in the history of the Catholic Church during the first half of the 15th century. Byzantium sought union with the Holy See because the Catholic Church was traditionally active in its policy towards the Christian East and enjoyed the respect of the Christians. However, the negotiations for union with Byzantium ended without success.
