Summary/Abstract: The Lubelskie Voivodeship with its untapped potential opportunities still is the poorest region in Poland. By 2007 it was also the poorest region in the European Union. It is famous for its picturesque landscape, clean air, good soil and a rich history, documented by many medieval monuments. Unfortunately, even these virtues, as well as well-known local brands, are not able to change the image of the Lubelskie Voivodeship as a region of poverty and backwardness. The situation could change by implementing in this region the concept of sustainable development, as well as engaging companies located in the area to do “social responsible business”. Companies developing their activities by taking into account the social and environmental innovation create new opportunities both for their business and the surroundings. The clusters located in the Lubelskie Voivodeship can also play a very important role in the regional development, perfectly suited to the European and national strategies of the sustainable development. The aim of this paper is to analyse the selected activities carried out in the poorest Polish region, especially in the context of implementation on its territory the concept of sustainable development that could be a great opportunity for using its huge potential in a way of catching up other European provinces.
