Summary/Abstract: The most salient features of the development of the school system in the twenty-year period 1947/48 — 1967/68 were a markedly dynamic expansion of all levels of education, a rapid rise in the number of schools of all kinds, and a substantial increase in the number of pupils and students, both nationally and regionally. This resulted in considerable changes in the educational composition of the population, especially in the educational and vocational structure of the labor force. But despite this rapid expansion, differences in the level of educational development between individual areas were not completely removed because of the inherited disparities in their economic and general development. They were, however, considerably alleviated.
