Summary/Abstract: In the paper I analyze semantic and syntactic features of the Polish expressions {zamierzać coś zrobić / robić} and {mieć zamiar coś zrobić / robić} ('to intend to do something'). I postulate a common semantic representation for them, though I also discuss contexts where they are not fully substitutable. Two semantic features appear crucial here: clear division in time between the act of intending and the intended action (connected with the subject's "readiness" do assert in a given moment {t} that in some time later than t he will do something in order to achieve p, and not his "readiness" to do {p} − which is a rhematic component of the explication), and a rational, intellectual background of the volitional states in question.
