Summary/Abstract: In the paper the problem of linguistic status of complementizers, as words that introduce a sentential complement into the surface syntactic structure, is discussed. According to the methodology of operational grammar proposed by A. Bogusławski, complementizers cannot be regarded as independent units of language. The author of the paper notices that there are distinct regularities which characterize the surface syntactic exchange of one complementizer for another. On account of this observation, she proposes a hypothesis that there exists a set of semantic operations responsible for these changes. In order to check this hypothesis and to find distinct sets of operands of such operations, a distributional analysis of the four most frequent formalizations of sentential complement (based on the material from Polish Valence Dictionary Walenty) is carried out.
